After a Mechanical Inspection
Vehicle certified compliant
If the vehicle complies with the Highway Safety Code and the Regulation respecting safety standards for road vehicles, the agent affixes an inspection sticker. A sticker affixed after a periodic mechanical inspection is valid for 6 or 12 months, depending on the type of vehicle. However, a new mechanical inspection could be required after a roadside intervention.
Vehicles with a minor defect
- Unregistered vehicle
The owner of a vehicle with a minor defect will receive a notice to repair the vehicle. The owner must ensure that the required repairs are made, and then return the vehicle to the inspection agent and prove that it is compliant. If the vehicle is certified to be compliant, the agent will affix an inspection sticker.
- Registered vehicle
The owner of a vehicle with a minor defect will receive a notice to repair the vehicle within 48 hours. The repairs must be carried out within that timeframe. If after 48 hours the vehicle is still not compliant, no one is allowed to put the vehicle back into operation, until the required repairs are made.
When the minor defect has been repaired, the owner must return the vehicle to the inspection agent and prove that it is compliant. If the vehicle is certified to be compliant, the agent will affix an inspection sticker.
Vehicles with a major defect
When a vehicle is found to have a major defect, no one is allowed to put the vehicle back into operation and offenders are subject to heavy fines. If the vehicle is not repaired or it is impossible to make the repairs, no one is allowed to put the vehicle back into operation. The owner can store it or discard it.
Once the major defect is repaired, the owner must return the vehicle to the inspection agent and prove that it is now compliant. If the vehicle is certified to be compliant, the agent will affix an inspection sticker.
