Alcofrein

A Program Operated by the SAAQ

The Alcofrein driver education program, formerly under the reponsibility of the Ministère de la Sécurité publique, is now recognized by Québec's Minister of Transport and has been operated by the SAAQ.

The Alcofrein program is for drivers who have committed a first impaired driving offence. Completing the program is a condition to obtaining a new driver's licence if an individual's summary assessment is favourable. The program is a means of raising awareness among offenders and preventing a repeat offence by:

  • reminding participants of the legal, social and personal consequences of impaired driving;
  • explaining the effects of alcohol and other intoxicants on the human body;
  • debunking myths that some people have about alcohol consumption.

An Alcofrein session lasts 3 hours and related fees must be paid by the offender.
