Heavy Vehicles Converted into Motor Homes

To ensure maximum safety for all road users, all modified or hand-crafted vehicles must undergo a mandatory mechanical inspection.

In addition, if you convert a heavy vehicle into a motor home, i.e. a vehicle permanently fitted as a dwelling, you must comply with the following construction standards:

Maximum Length
The length of the motor home must not exceed:

  • 11 metres for all motor vehicles with a rear overhang of more than 4 metres;
  • 12.5 metres for all motor vehicles with a rear overhang of 4 metres or less;
  • 14 metres for all buses with a rear overhang of 4 metres or less.

The overhang is measured from the centre of the axle or axle group to the back of the vehicle.

Cargo Space
If the motor home has cargo space, it must not be larger than 30% of the length of the vehicle (bumper to bumper) or exceed 3.65 metres (12 feet).

Fifth Wheel
Neither a fifth wheel, nor a place to attach one, will be accepted on a hand-crafted motor home.

Mandatory Equipment
All hand-crafted motor homes must include the following components:

  • a kitchen that includes: a stove, refrigerator, counter, sink and table;
  • sleeping quarters that include: a hide-a-bed or bed;
  • a complete bathroom that includes: a bath or shower and a toilet;
  • an electrical system that is independent of the vehicle's motor;
  • a propane gas system with a certificate of installation compliance;
  • a potable water tank;
  • a sewage tank;
  • a water heater;
  • a heating system that is independent of the vehicle's motor;
  • a number of seats with seat belts equal to the number of places to sleep.

In addition, it is strongly recommended that motor homes be equipped with smoke, propane and carbon monoxide detectors.
