Become a Taxi Driver

To work as a taxi driver, a person must hold a taxi driver's licence issued by the SAAQ. This licence is valid for two years and can be used anywhere in Québec, except the city of Montréal.

You must hold a class 4C driver's licence or higher (1, 2, 3, 4A or 4B). A person who holds a class 4C licence is also authorized to drive vehicles from classes 5, 6D and 8.

Taxi driver in Québec City, Longueuil or Laval
To drive a taxi in one of these cities, you must meet the following requirements:

  • have completed a mandatory training program to drive within these municipalities.
  • carry proof that you have passed the mandatory training program, for presentation to a carrier enforcement officer where requested during a roadside check.

If your taxi driver's licence was issued before June 30, 2002
If your taxi driver's licence for the cities of Québec, Longueuil or Laval were issued prior to June 30, 2002, the SAAQ will forward you an attestation of training equivalency. If you have not received an attestation, contact the SAAQ to request one:

If you completed the mandatory training program after June 30, 2002
If you completed the mandatory training program after June 30, 2002, the school where you received training will issue an attestation. If you did not receive an attestation, contact the school where you completed training to request one.
