Driver's Licence Fee Payment and Renewal
A driver's licence is made to last 4 years but payment of fees must be done each year to retain the driving privilege.
Driving with an expired licence is an offence punishable by a fine of $300 to $600. Other fees may be added to the fine provided under the Highway Safety Code (contribution to the IVAC crime victims compensation program, registry fees, etc.). You will have to pass knowledge and road tests if you want to get a licence again after three years or more from the date you no longer hold a valid licence.
There are six ways to pay licence fees
- through a financial institution
- by online payment
- by pre-authorized debits
- at an SAAQ service outlet
- by mail
- by telephone
Late payment
There is a charge for late payment, on top of the amount shown on your payment notice.
NSF cheque
The SAAQ charges additional fees for each cheque rejected by a financial institution for insufficient funds.
Not renewing your licence?
Advise us by phone before the due date shown on your payment notice. Otherwise, fees must be paid.
You will have to pass knowledge and road tests if you want to get a licence again after three years or more from the date you no longer hold a valid licence.
Need to renew your health insurance card as well?
Your health insurance card can be renewed at the same time as your driver's licence, at any of our service outlets.
- Fill out your health insurance card renewal notice and bring it along with two valid pieces of identification.
- A clerk will take your photograph and record your signature. Charges will apply to take the photograph and plasticize your driver's licence, which will be mailed to you within a few days.
- The Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec will send you your health insurance card within 30 days.
