Before you can replace a driver's licence, you must prove your identity. Go to an SAAQ service outlet and provide one of the following pieces of identification bearing your photo:
Note: For replacement of a damaged licence, you may show that licence as proof of your identity, provided you are still recognizable on the photo, and the reference number, name and identification number are still readable.

You must declare the loss or theft of a driver's licence with the appropriate authorities where you are staying: local police or the Canadian embassy or consulate. You should therefore request an official certificate bearing the seal or written on the letterhead of the issuing body. This certificate must be written in French or English, or be submitted with an enclosed translation.
To replace your driver's licence, mail or fax the official certificate and a duly signed licence replacement request to the SAAQ. Ensure that your request contains the following information:

Note: If you are vacationing outside of Québec for a few months, you are not required to provide any documents to justify your temporary absence from Québec.
A licence without a photo or signature will subsequently be issued (find out the cost to replace a driver's licence without photo). This licence will be valid for a period of up to one year. It will therefore remain valid until your next licence renewal. A licence without photo or signature is a special measure that allows you to drive until you return to Québec. If you would like to receive your driver's licence by express mail or courier, please indicate this in your application and enclose a credit card number and its expiry date. We accept American Express, Master Card and Visa. Please note, however, that credit cards are only used to cover postal or courier costs.
