Driver's Licence

Proof of driving experience

Exchanging a Canadian or American driver's licence
Driving experience acquired outside of Québec can be entered on your record at the SAAQ. Please note that only experience driving a passenger vehicle will be taken into account.

All entries must be supported by one of the following two official documents:

  • your driver's licence
    or
  • your driving record.

Driver's licence
At the time of the exchange, the driving experience acquired outside Québec that is entered on your record corresponds to the validity period that generally appears on the licence you wish to exchange.

Driving record
To add or enter driving experience acquired in a jurisdiction other than Québec, you must submit a driving record history produced by the authority that issued this driver's licence.

This original document must have been issued less than 90 days before and include the following information:

  • the types of licences you hold or have held (learner's licence, probationary licence, driver's licence);
  • the licence class(es) you hold or have held (passenger vehicle, motorcycle or other);
  • the issue and expiry date for each type of licence (learner's licence, probationary licence, driver's licence);
  • the dates when your driver's licence was not in effect because it was under penalty, suspended, cancelled or not renewed.

The SAAQ does not take into account driving experience:

  • acquired during a learning period (learner's licence);
  • that does not appear on a driving record.
