Driver's Licence

For New Residents of Québec Who Have Never Held a Driver's Licence

Anyone who wants to drive in Québec must hold a driver's licence. If you have never held a driver's licence and want to get a Québec driver's licence, these conditions apply.

General conditions for obtaining a Québec driver's licence

  • to operate a moped or motorized scooter: be at least 14 years of age;
  • other types of vehicle: be at least age 16;
  • Written consent from your father, mother or guardian is needed if you are under age 18;
  • pass the required tests;
  • payment for licence tests and fees.

Steps

  1. Make an appointment by telephone. Over the phone, the clerk will ask you which documents you have in your possession (birth certificate, permanent resident card, passport, etc.). Have these in hand when calling.
  2. Go in person to the appointment with a clerk to determine your eligibility to undertake the licensing process for new drivers. Bring the originals of your official documents (birth certificate, Permanent Resident Card, passport, etc.).

To find out the other steps in getting a driver's licence, consult the section on Québec driver's licence classes and select the class of licence you want to get.
