Outreach Activity: "The Power to Change Everything"

The Power to Change EverythingThe purpose of this outreach activity on the dangers of alcohol, drugs and speeding is to provide youth with a voice so that, together, they come to realize that they have the power to change the course of events. Every young person holds the key to making a difference in terms of road accidents. The point of the activity is to make them think: “I have the power to change everything.”

Target audience
Secondary 5 students as well as their teachers.

Material
The material comes in a kit for use by the teacher. It contains the following:

  • DVD
A 21-minute long DVD serves as the basis for a discussion with the students on the risks and consequences associated with driving. It shows a clip of the song "La grosse tête" by Félix Gore and presents witness accounts by health care and public security professionals. Actor Maxime Dumontier serves as host and narrator.
  • Discussion Guide
The guide proposes a number of discussion topics to get students to react to what they have seen and heard on the DVD.
  • Poster
The poster is used to promote the activity and can also be used as a reminder to students.
  • Road safety record for young drivers card
Every student receives a card that summarizes essential data on speeding, alcohol, drugs, fatigue, seat belt use and cell phones.
  • Postcard
A postcard displaying the graphic design for the activity is given to every student. A sentence on the back of the card invites them to commit to making a difference: "On the road, I have the power to change everything." A space is also provided for the student to sign the card, which can be used as a reminder or be posted on the class bulletin board.
  • Lyrics to the song
A copy of the lyrics to the song in the clip "La grosse tête" (in French only) is given to every student.

This material is for use by teachers of secondary 5 students only. To order, or for any question regarding this kit, please write to us.
