Road Safety

School Bus Transportation

The school bus transportation sector has 10,000 vehicles in use, carries an estimated 531,000 children and travels an estimated 1 million km each day. Exposure to road accidents is therefore significant. School buses, however, continue to be one of the safest forms of transportation.

Since 1986, no deaths have occurred on board a school bus during the school year. The biggest risk to children's safety is outside of a bus, from either the bus itself or traffic. In 2010, 258 people were in accidents involving a school bus. Fourteen of the accident victims were pedestrians either crossing the street, or boarding or getting off a school bus. None of the victims died, but two sustained serious injuries and 12 had minor injuries,.

The SAAQ and police forces rely on the cooperation of everyone: parents, children, motorists and school bus drivers, to reduce the number of school bus accidents.

To discuss a problem related to school bus transportation, contact the person responsible at the transportation service of your school board.
