Road Safety

School Bus Transportation

The school bus transportation sector has over 9,500 vehicles in use, carries an estimated 575,000 children and travels an estimated 1 million km each day. Exposure to road accidents is therefore significant. School buses, however, continue to be one of the safest forms of transportation.

Over the last twelve years, no deaths have occurred on board a school bus. The biggest risk to children's safety is outside of a bus, from either the bus itself or traffic. Between 2002 and 2007, 50 school children between the ages of 5 to 17 were involved in accidents while crossing a road, getting on or getting off a bus. Three of these victims were fatalities.

The SAAQ and police forces rely on the cooperation of everyone: parents, children, motorists and school bus drivers, to reduce the number of school bus accidents.

To discuss a problem related to school bus transportation, contact the person responsible at the transportation service of your school board.
