School children between ages of 5 and 12 are particularly vulnerable on roads.
Because children can be unpredictable and are often unaware of danger, many victims of serious or fatal accidents are children on the way to and from school. A recent study revealed that 68% of children cross the road without looking when they are in a school zone.
The basic principles of the school safety patrol program were developed in the 1920s by CAA-Québec
. Since the 1980s, the SAAQ and CAA-Québec have teamed up to implement this program in Québec elementary schools.
The mission of the safety patrol program is to encourage school children to practise safety when walking, riding the school bus or playing in the school yard.
School safety patrollers are usually recruited from among grade 6 elementary students. They assume their role within the elementary school population. Their relationship with peers is that of a big brother or sister.
School safety patrollers are trained for their tasks by the director of a school team. Depending on the issues at hand, a school can create three types of safety patrollers: a “pedestrian safety patroller”, “school bus safety patroller” and “school patroller”.
Through a careful and positive approach, safety patrollers guide their peers towards increased safety in the school environment.
