The way to school can sometimes be wrought with danger for elementary school children. The spontaneity and lack of judgment of some youngsters make them particularly vulnerable in traffic. Some intersections can also be hazardous, even where road signs and traffic signals are present. To offset these risks, a number of municipalities have hired adult school crossing guards to ensure the safety of children at intersections.
To assist the task of police, municipal and school authorities in managing and training a team of school crossing guards, the SAAQ has provided a series of documents, entitled Le brigadier scolaire adulte : au service de la sécurité routière (available in French only), which comes with a guide explaining how to introduce an adult school safety patrol program, a crossing guard's manual and a video. These documents detail safe practices and rules governing the daily responsibilities of adult school crossing guards.
At the heart of this program is “determining the danger zone”. In order for children to cross roads safely, crossing guards must apply their knowledge and strategically position themselves at the location where children will have maximum protection.
The guide to introducing an adult school safety patrol program contains printed copies of a presentation that can be given using an overhead projector.
