2010 Campaign – Drivers, obey signs and signals. Pedestrians, for your own protection, make sure you have been seen and cross at intersections only

Negligence, inattention and distraction are the main causes of accidents involving drivers and pedestrians. Nearly 80% of those accidents happen at intersections or between two intersections. Year after year, the SAAQ notes a greater number of pedestrian accident victims during the fall (October, November and December) than at other times of the year namely because:

  • it gets dark earlier;
  • rain and drizzle make pedestrians cross anywhere they can to get where they are going more quickly.

Hence, during Pedestrian Month (October), the SAAQ encourages drivers to obey road signs and traffic signals and make sure that they are visible to pedestrians. We also ask pedestrians to follow the same advice and, as far as possible, cross at intersections only.

When you're walking

  • go to the nearest intersection to cross;
  • walk on the sidewalk, or, if there isn't one, walk on the side of the road, facing traffic;
  • avoid crossing the street between two parked cars;
  • wear light-coloured clothes or clothing with reflective strips so that you are easily visible.

When you drive

  • bring your vehicle to a stop before the stop line;
  • obeytraffic lights for pedestrians;
  • before turning right on a red light where permitted, yield the right-of-way to pedestrians;
  • keep your headlights on at all times so that pedestrians can see you and you can see them.
