Road Safety

Driving a Motorcycle

Driving a motorcycle is definitely riskier than driving an automobile.

Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users: they have less protection and are sometimes difficult to see.

However, some risks can be avoided. Motorcyclists should:

  • acquire the skills necessary to control their vehicle;
  • use safe behaviour when riding.

Other road users also need to look out for motorcyclists and share the road with them.

Speed: The Risk is Real
Forty-one percent of fatal motorcycle accidents involve no other vehicle (excluding 2% of accidents that involve both a motorcycle and a pedestrian or an animal). The majority of these occur in curves, and speed is often a factor.

What's key to enjoying a safe ride: obeying speed limits and staying alert to traffic conditions.

Riding an Unfamiliar Motorcycle is Risky
Think carefully before hitting the road with a new motorcycle or one that you have borrowed from a friend!

Twenty-five percent of motorcyclists involved in a fatal accident had owned their vehicle for less than three months, and 17% were not the owner.

It is therefore a good idea to gradually familiarize yourself with a new motorcycle or one that you have borrowed.

If you are driving a motorcycle for the first time or you have not driven one for a long time, be even more careful!
