Road Safety

Gestures of Courtesy Make a Difference on the Road!

Strictly obeying the Highway Safety Code and traffic rules is one way of being courteous, but not the only one. Courtesy involves good manners.

Road etiquette means watching out for others, especially the most vulnerable.

A Few Courtesy Tips!
To show courtesy on the road, follow these safety tips:

  1. Plan your itinerary. Make sure that you have plenty of time to get where you are going.
  2. Obey speed limits, road signs, traffic signals and traffic regulations.
  3. Treat other road users with respect.
  4. Go with the flow. Accept the driving pace of other road users.
  5. Be attentive and considerate towards the most vulnerable road users (cyclists and pedestrians).
  6. Wave to thank another road user.
  7. Use a gesture to apologize to another road user if you make an error. This reduces the risk of confrontation.
  8. Signal turns and lane changes well in advance.
  9. Make eye contact with other road users to make communication easier and to help avoid conflicts.
  10. Remain calm if an incident occurs and concentrate on driving your vehicle.
  11. Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

Do You Tend to Lose Patience on the Road?
To avoid stressful situations that cause impatience and result in conflicts on the road:

  • Avoid driving if you are experiencing fatigue, stress or an emotional situation.
  • Where possible, use roads that are less travelled.
  • Avoid strained conversations with passengers in your vehicle.
  • Remember that bad manoeuvres by other motorists are not always intentional or voluntary.
  • Cooperate with other motorists.
