Because young children are injured or killed in road accidents each year, it is hard to dispute the need for children to learn about road safety at a young age.
Target Group
Kindergarten children age 5
Objectives
To introduce age 5 kindergarten children to four safety themes: pedestrian, school bus, bicycle and seat belt use. The Carrousel, which was reprinted in 2003, highlights pedestrian and school bus safety in particular, using an approach that is in keeping with the new preschool education program.
Contents
Four stories were written to develop the Carrousel themes. To hold preschoolers' attention, appeal to their senses and connect with their universe while introducing them to road safety, the children are taken into the fantasy world of the Carrousel's story characters.
The Carrousel then guides children to share the fantasy world of their story heroes through a series of innovative learning situations that focus on pedestrian and school bus safety: discussions, role playing, performing arts, crafts, educational games, etc.
The Carrousel comes with teaching material: a presentation handbook, two theme guidebooks, two copiable material booklets and an audiotape. A large road map and storybook, together with small storybooks complete the kit.
